Oscar 2022: CODA wins best picture in a ceremony overshadowed by Will Smith's slap
In an Oscar ceremony full of shocks and overshadowed by the participation of Will Smith, CODA won the grand prize this Sunday: the best film.
It was announced by Liza Minelli, who won hers in 1972 for the film Cabaret and is today in a wheelchair, after she handed him the envelope with the information about the singer and also an Oscar winner, Lady Gaga.
An acronym for Child of Deaf Adults Child of deaf adult(s), CODA tells the story of Ruby -played by actress Emily Jones- the hearing daughter of a deaf family, who has to balance the demands to help her parents in their daily life with her own ambitions to be a singer.
The indie film had been an underdog throughout the Oscars run, but has slowly emerged as a contender in recent weeks.
The film, produced by Apple, also won the other two categories of the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards in which it was nominated, for best adapted screenplay and best supporting actor.
